I used to write poetry all the time, but then I became so self-critical, I had a self-induced writer's block because nothing was ever good enough to put onto paper.
Anyway, I actually did write a poem recently (my Spanish teacher assigned us to write a poem in Spanish
). It's a love poem, so if you don't like love poems, don't read any further.
Disclaimer from the first time I posted this on a forum: A couple of lines have been slightly exaggerated for artistic purposes, but most of it is true to life. Also, please don't critique my Spanish; I know I'm not fluent. I just posted the Spanish version for your curiosity and so you could see how it changes with the translations.
Original English, written while trying to keep in mind how I might translate it into Spanish, no revisions or editing done whatsoever:
(Originally Untitled)Your smile makes me smile,
And my smile does the same (to you).
A story, a look, a touch on the cheek,
You do anything for my smile. . .
You say I smile too much.
It's not always so easy to smile every day,
But the days when I don't smile
Are worse because your happiness
Disappears those days, too.
When one cries, so does the other,
But soon we both smile
Because we are together.
I treasure our friendship
More than you can know.
You give me your smiles,
And you give me mine,
But I want more than your smile.
In Spanish, a few revisions for translating and flow purposes:
Momentos de SonrisasTu sonrisa me causa sonreír,
Y mi sonrisa hace el mismo a tí.
Un cuento, una mirada, un rozado en la mejilla,
Haces cualquier cosa, sólo para mi sonrisa. . .
Dices que sonrío demasiado.
No es siempre fácil a sonreír,
Pero los días cuando no puedo,
Esos días son peores,
Porque tu felicidad y tu sonrisa
Están ausente esos días, también.
Cuando uno llora, el otro llora,
Pero pronto ambos sonreímos
Porque estamos juntos.
Aprecio nuestra amistad
Más que puedes saber.
Me das tu sonrisas,
Y me das mías. . .
Pero quiero más que sonrisas.
Direct translation from Spanish version into English (just so you know how it's worded in Spanish):
Moments of SmilesYour smile causes me to smile,
And my smile does the same to you.
A story, a look, a brush on the cheek,
You do anything, just for my smile. . .
You say I smile too much.
It's not always easy to smile,
But the days when I can't,
Those days are worse,
Because your happiness and your smile
Are absent those days, too.
When one cries, the other cries,
But soon we both smile
Because we are together.
I cherish/appreciate our friendship
More than you can know.
You give me your smiles,
And you give me mine. . .
But I want more than smiles.
I honestly like the Spanish version best, but, obviously, the first version is the better of the two English ones.
