After realizing that my way to get a place I could truly call my home was by going back to Jersey, I went straight to my parents. Being a 'fresh out of college' kid, I needed some serious moolah because at that time I didn’t have jack shit to call my own. So if I wanted to go home I needed my parents, I needed to be dependent for a while.
"Hi, mom." I smiled awkwardly as she tried to hug the life out of me.
"My baby girl is home!" She gushed with emotion.
"How's my pretty little girl doing?" My dad smiled, pulling his cigarette away from his mouth momentarily to pry me away from my mother to hug me.
"I'm alright, pops." I smiled, pulling away from his embrace.
"Why the sudden visit, pumpkin? I thought you liked living in that rat hole you rented at that junkie dump." He blinked simplistically.
"Daaad!" I whined disapprovingly, "It didn't feel like home. None of the apartments I've been to feel like home. That's why I'm here. I want to go back home." I explained.
"You know we always keep your room open, Jezy. You're welcome to stay here as long as you like." My mom smiled anxiously, "We may have to clean up a little in there, but it shouldn't be too-"
"I don't want to stay here, mama. I don't mean here. I mean… Jersey. Gimme Gerard's number. I wanna talk to him. I wanna see if maybe he can help me get settled in there, help me find a good apartment there." I bit my lip as they looked at me like I was a coo-coo bird, "Last time I was here, mom, you mentioned that Gerard missed me, and he wanted to talk to me, but I moved so rapidly and never invested in a cell phone, so you couldn't give him my number. Remember? You were talking to Donna the whole time I was here, and got off the phone right before I left."
"Jersey? Honey that's so far away." She looked frightened.
"How do you know Gerard still wants to talk to you? Maybe he's busy, maybe he has a girlfriend, or fiancée now. Perhaps he's even married now. Think pumpkin, think of the possibilities." My dad said, blowing a cloud of cigarette smoke.
"Come on dad. If either of the Way boys had girlfriends, were engaged, or married, mama would have said something. I know Mikey is dating that Alicia girl that used to go to a private school in Irvington. But Gerard, he's free territory on the single person's monopoly board." I smiled goofily.
"But Jersey, honey? Why not get Gerard to come here?" My mom asked, unmistakably having separation issues.
"And tear him away from home? His friends? No way, I'm not doing that to him. I have nothing but you guys here, I need to see Gerard. I'm going to Jersey with or without your help. There is no stopping me, mama. Now please. Get me Gerard's number."
"All the way to Jersey? Get Gerard to come here for a week or two." She coaxed.
"MOM! Have you not been listening to a word I've said? Gee and I were born and raised in Jersey. We were best friends in Jersey. So all my great memories will be where now?" I paused, they looked at me like they had no clue what to say. I rolled my eyes and answered myself, "Jersey!"
"You want to move back to Jersey. All the way back across the country. So far away from your father and I?" She asked skeptically.
"Yes, mother. Now get me Gerard's phone number or so help me I'll tear this place apart to find it!" I growled irritably.
"Okay, okay! Don't get huffy with me!" She said as she hobbled away.
"Why won't you guys just be happy for me?" I asked my dad, slinking down into an armchair.
"I'm all for it, pumpkin. It's your mother that needs convincing. I'm happy if you're happy. You're just the only daughter we have now, since Sophie passed on. Your mom just wants to keep you close." My father explained.
"And you…" I paused to let him finish my sentence.
"I want to keep you close too, but if you're happy in Jersey, that's where you should be." He smiled, kissing my cheek.
"Okay here it is!" My mother called, handing me a number and the phone.
"Thanks, mama." I smiled, giving her a quick kiss before I dashed out the door, and sat on the porch
I dialed in the number as quickly as I could. It started ringing, and I started getting butterflies in my stomach. Then a sudden stop came to the ringing, and a voice came over the line.
A handsome-sounding, masculine voice, "Hello?"
